Der Ritterorden der Johanniter (später dann Malteserritter genannt) erhielt 1530 als Lehen von Kaiser Karl V Malta. Der Ausbau der Stadt und der Festung Valletta begann 1566 nach der großen Belagerung durch die Osmanen unter dem Großmeister Jean de la Valette, nach dem die Stadt auch benannt ist. Um den militärischen Erfordernissen zu entsprechen, schuf der Festungsarchitekt der Medici, Francesco Laparelli di Cortona, eine der ersten vollständig am Reißbrett entworfenen Planstädte Europas. Die Arbeiten waren enorm: mittels eines 15 m tiefen Trockengrabens wurde die Halbinsel von Festland abgetrennt und die Bastionen direkt aus dem Felsen heraus geschnitten. Dahinter durchlaufen wie ein Gitter 9 Gassen und 12 Straßen die Landzunge. Ursprünglich wollte man sogar den gesamten Felsrücken abtragen, aus Kostengründen nahm man aber davon Abstand, so daß die Treppen zu den beiden Häfen steil abfallen.<br><br />
Auf der Rückseite der maltesischen 5-Pound-Banknoten der 60ger Jahre ist die St. Barbara-Bastion auf der südwestlichen Seite von Valletta am Grand Harbour abgebildet. Im Vordergrund sieht man einen der zahlreichen Wachtürmchen der Bastionen. Die Gebäude direkt am Wasser sind die Hallen des Fischmarktes. Die Grünanlage auf der Felsenbastion dahinter ist der ''Lower Barraca Garden''. In seiner Mitte steht ein neoklassizistischer Tempel für den ersten britischen Zivilkommissar Maltas, Alexander Ball. Von dort, wie auch von der gesamten Bastion, hat man einen wunderbaren Blick über den Grand Harbour.<br><br />
