Seit Beginn des Ersten Weltkriegs am 1. August 1914 bis zur Einführung der Reichsmark im Oktober 1924 durchlief das deutsche Geldwesen große Veränderungen, vom Ende des Goldmünzenumlaufs bis zur Hochinflation, die im November 1923 10 Milliarden Papiermark auf den Wert eines Pfennigs schrumpfen ließ. Im Krieg zwangen Mängel in Nachschub an kleiner Münze die Reichsbank zur Duldung lokalen Notgelds. Wie viele andere Kommunen in der Provinz Hessen-Nassau und im Reich setzte die Kreisstadt Melsungen die Maßnahmen eigenständig um. Sie war 1917 unter den ersten Städten in Hessen, die Pfennigwerte aus Zink und Eisen ausgaben. Diesen "Kleingelersatzmarken" folgten bei Kriegsende für einige Monate Geldscheine von 1 bis 10 Mark. Zum Schluss war das Notgeld wertlos und wurde gegen den Widerstand der Behörden eine von Sammlern auf einem konjunkturhaften Markt gefragte Ware.<br />

Vor dem Hintergrund lokaler Spielarten des Geldes, die es selbst zu Zeiten der Globalisierung noch gibt, werden Aspekte der vergleichenden Landes- und Ortsgeschichte, der Wirtschaft- und Sozialgeschichte sowie der Kulturgeschichte zusammengeführt. Der mikrohistorische Ansatz macht Melsungen über die engere Numismatik und Geldgeschichte hinaus zum hervorragenden Exempel für die frühe Notgeldzeit und ihre Folgen.</div>
